Life is full of challenges. This is especially true for Scotty Smiley, a retired US Army veteran from Spokane, Washington. On April 6, 2005, during his deployment in Mosul, Iraq, Scotty was hit by a suicide car bomb, leaving him permanently blind. Smiley has spent the last ten years attempting feats deemed extremely difficult for those with sight, and nearly impossible without it. Scotty has climbed mountains, gone skydiving, surfed, and written a book, all without the use of his eyes. On June 28, 2015, Scotty competed in the Coeur d'Alene Ironman triathlon, accompanied by his racing guide and brother-in-law, Andy Cooper.Smiley's story is paralleled in the lives of countless veterans who have faced insurmountable odds. It is our goal to bring this story to those who need it most, especially those who are all too familiar with the perils of war and the challenges of living with a disability.
