Simon Cowell: 'I'm Back In The Real World' After Ratings Disappointment

Simon Cowell says he regrets saying that viewership of less than 20 million for 'The X Factor' would be a disappointment.

Cowell's talent competition has averaged about 12 million since its much-hyped debut. It premiered to numbers almost 40% lower than the 'American Idol' premiere in January and only about 18% higher than Zooey Deschanel's 'New Girl.'

"I'm not going to lie. I wanted 20 million when we launched," Cowell tells AP.

"But now I'm kind of back in the real world and I'm seeing this grow naturally. I'm as happy as I've ever been."

"We're not in Russia where you have one show. This is life. If you're competitive and it spurs you on, I kind of get excited by it."

Besides being a judge, Cowell has a much larger stake in the program being the show's creator and executive producer.
