SAG Awards 2009 Winners Include Sean Penn, Meryl Streep and Heath Ledger

Even though the SAG Awards handed another win to 'Slumdog Millionaire' on Sunday night, it went a much different route than the recent Golden Globe Awards when it came to the top acting prizes.

Not that they were any less deserving. Sean Penn was awarded the top actor in a leading role for playing gay activist, Harvey Milk, in 'Milk' and Meryl Streep was named the top actress in a leading role for her performance as a nun in 'Doubt'.

The Screen Actors Guild also became the latest group to honor Heath Ledger posthumously as it named him best male actor in a supporting role for his performance in 'The Dark Knight' as the Joker, nudging him even closer a much deserved Oscar next month. On the female side, Kate Winslet (photosKate Winslet photos) scooped up the best supporting actress award for her work in 'The Reader'.

"I'm a bit lost for words, I'm sorry,” Winslet said in her SAG speech on Sunday. "I don't have to make another speech do I? I am so bad at this," she joked backstage. "Clearly I am still learning... I'm too emotional to lose and too emotional to win. I need lessons in awards season."

Meanwhile, lead actor Dev Patel couldn't contain his excitement for 'Slumdog Millionaire', which took home the SAG award for best movie cast: "We each get our own award!? They're all going to have one of these in Mumbai?!," he exclaimed upon hearing that the children in the film would also receive trophies. "They don't even weigh as much as this!"

But the best line of the night belonged to Hugh Laurie, after he won for best actor in a drama series: "So this just goes on my credit card, right?," he joked as he signed his name backstage.

The rest of the TV side went as expected, with once again a clean sweep for NBC's '30 Rock' and AMC's 'Mad Men' named top drama series cast.
