Matt Damon On Sexual Harassment Remarks: I Should 'Close My Mouth For a While'

Matt Damon is apologizing for stepping into the debate about sexual misconduct.

Damon faced backlash after he tried to explain that not all accusations of sexual assault and harassment were equal.

"There's a difference between patting someone on the butt and rape or child molestation, right?," he told ABC's Popcorn with Peter Travers. "Both of those behaviors need to be confronted and eradicated without question, but they shouldn't be conflated."

In citing an example, he singled out Louis CK for the comedian's acceptance of his behavior.

"That's the sign of somebody who — well, we can work with that," Damon, a father of four daughters, said. "Like, when I'm raising my kids, this constant personal responsibility is as important as anything else they learn before they go off in the world."

"I don’t know Louis CK. I've never met him. I'm a fan of his, but I don’t imagine he's going to do those things again. You know what I mean? I imagine the price that he's paid at this point is so beyond anything."

So when he appeared on 'Today' this week, Damon was careful to not step in it again.

"I really wish I'd listened a lot more before I weighed in on this," Damon expressed. "Ultimately what it is for me is that I don't want to further anybody's pain. With anything that I do or say, so for that I'm really sorry."

"And Time's Up, a lot of those women are my dear friends and I love them and respect them and support what they're doing and want to be a part of that change and want to go along for the ride, but I should get in the back seat and close my mouth for a while."
