'Cloverfield' Sets January Record With $41 Million Opening

With producer JJ Abrams once again proving his marketing genius, 'Cloverfield', the low-budget monster movie that's been called America's answer to 'Godzilla', took in monstrous $41 million opening at the weekend box office.

According to studio estimates on Sunday night, 'Cloverfield' set a record for a January release, this from a $25 million movie with a no-name cast. Thanks in large part to the buzz its trailer and monster created when it was shown ahead of 'Transformers' last summer.

Box office experts expected 'Cloverfield' to open in the $20 million range, a little ahead of '27 Dresses', but it doubled those numbers.

'27 Dresses' opened at No. 2 with $22.4 million, and last weekend's 'The Bucket List' fell to No. 3 with $15.2 million. Katie Holmes (photosKatie Holmes photos)' return to the big screen in 'Mad Money' earned just $7.7 million.

It also appears the movie will set a record for the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, overtaking 'Black Hawk Down' which holds the current record with $33.6 million, 'Cloverfield' is projected to earn more than $47 million if the Monday holiday is included.

Here's the complete box office top ten for the weekend:

1. Cloverfield, $41 million.
2. 27 Dresses, $22.4 million.
3. The Bucket List, $15.2 million.
4. Juno, $10.3 million.
