Adam Carolla Provides American 'Top Gear' Pilot Details

Comedian Adam Carolla who was named host of the American version of the popular BBC show 'Top Gear' last month, provided a few details of the upcoming pilot episode on his radio show this week.

Carolla said the pilot episode of the show was taped last Saturday in Downey, California, and while he wasn't allowed to divulge a whole lot, he wanted to give a few details as to what viewers can expect.

Carolla said for the pilot episode they picked a "reasonably priced car", but the task of selecting a suitable celebrity was much more of an effort. He said they came very close to landing Howie Mandel and/or former 'Spice Girl' Melanie Brown, but at the last moment they were able to land David Hasselhoff. Although there are rumours that Alec Baldwin was also approached, so we can expect some of these names in future episodes.

Corolla said the original 'Knight Rider' was a great interview and "drove the wheels off" the car.

A reader who was at the taping and tipped us off had this to say about the pilot: "The show looks great, everyone had fun watching the filmed segments, the audience was filled with fans of the original show and I think everyone was impressed with how much they were able to live up to it."

The show will simply be called 'Top Gear', just like the original. NBC will air the show sometime in the fall/winter, but it doesn't yet have a spot in the network's year-round schedule yet. It's assumed, it will take the spot of another series, should there be a cancellation.
