Writer Claims Mel Gibson 'Hates Jews', Planned To Kill Ex-Girlfriend

Screenwriter Joe Eszterhas believes Mel Gibson passed on his script for Maccabees, a film about the Jewish hero Judah Maccabee, because he "hates Jews."

Eszterhas alleges this and more in a scathing letter to Gibson that has now leaked out.

The writer alleges that Gibson only wanted to make the film in an "attempt to deflect continuing charges of anti-Semitism, which have dogged you, charges which have crippled your career."

"But I've come to the conclusion that the reason you won't make 'The Maccabees' is the ugliest possible one. You hate Jews," Eszterhas writes.

Eszterhas, who is Jewish, claims Gibson continually referred to Jews in front of him as "Hebes," "oven-dodgers" and "Jewboys". He says the actor called the Holocaust "mostly a lot of horsesh-t."

The screenwriter even alleges that the actor has threatened to kill ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva, the woman who recorded Gibson's crazed rants.

"And then you were even more explicit about your threat: 'I'm going to kill her! I'm going to have her killed!' You said you'd become friends with two FBI agents or former agents and they were going to help you to kill her."

Gibson has now responded to the charges in his own open letter, saying he didn't move ahead with the film because the script simply wasn't good enough.

"The great majority of the facts as well as the statements and actions attributed to me in your letter are utter fabrications," Gibson writes.

"Honestly, Joe, not only was the script delivered later than you promised, both Warner Brothers and I were extraordinarily disappointed with the draft."

"The decision not to proceed with you was based on the quality of your script, not on any other factor. I think that we can agree that this should be our last communication."

"Contrary to your assertion that I was only developing Maccabees to burnish my tarnished reputation. I absolutely want to make this movie; it's just that neither Warner Brothers nor I want to make this movie based on your script."
