'Wonder Woman' Debut Breaks Box Office Record For Female Director

The release of 'Wonder Woman' has made it the top domestic debut of all time for a female director at the box office.

The DC film, which stars Gal Gadot, earned $100.5 million domestically and an estimated $223 million worldwide. It also earned a whopping $38 million of that from China alone, where it was the No. 1 film.

The Patty Jenkins-helmed film reportedly cost $150 million to make. The previous record for a female director had been held by Sam Taylor-Johnson, who directed 'Fifty Shades of Grey'.

"Patty's vision mesmerized the audience. She is a real talent. Clearly, this is a movie that is resonating with moviegoers around the globe," Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Jeff Goldstein tells THR. "I am sure we will be seeing a lot more of Diana on the big screen."

'Wonder Woman' also continues to receive rave reviews and actress Lupita Nyong'o, a fan of the heroine, had nothing but praise for it.

"I just left the theater and KNOW for CERTAIN that the GODS have seen fit to BLESS us with WONDERWOMAN. W.O.W. It is a superhero movie like none I have ever seen," she raves on social media.

"Epic. FUN. Engaging. Stylistically Captivating. Funny in an honest, not-trying-too-hard way. Witty. Smart. Perfect length. Fierce. Sensual. Just amazing."

"Gal Gadot will glue you to the screen and at the same time make you want to run to the nearest costume shop to get your W on and join the GODESSNESS right away."

"Director Patty Jenkins IS NOT PLAYING AROUND," she adds, "as she gives us some AMAZON REALNESS in an exquisitely directed story. Chris Pine is irresistable. The score is KILLER. And it is the type of film that I think you can enjoy over and over. This movie definitely goes down as a classic in its genre for me."
