Visual FX Team Demonstrate Building Of Digital New York In 'Avengers'

Although roughly a third of 'The Avengers' is set in New York City, you may be surprised to learn that precious little was actually filmed there.

Crew from Industrial Light and Magic photographed 7-miles of city streets from a variety of heights and at different times of day for over 250,000 images then digitally recreated roughly 20 square blocks of mid-town Manhattan for the film.

Live action shoots were held primarily on sound stages with green screens in New Mexico and in the streets of Cleveland to create a seamless recreation of New York city with the smallest details.

The work earned 'The Avengers' an Academy Awards nomination for Best Visual Effects but the Oscar went to 'Life of Pi'.
