Tom Cruise Admits Scientology A Factor In Katie Holmes Divorce

Tom Cruise has admitted that Katie Holmes (photosKatie Holmes photos) told him that Scientology was one of the reasons for their divorce.

According to a new deposition as part of the actor's defamation suit against 'In Touch' magazine's report that he "abandoned" Suri, Cruise confirms that Holmes wanted to protect their daughter from his religion.

Cruise becomes upset when first asked whether Holmes divorced him "in part to protect Suri from Scientology."

"Listen, I find that question offensive," he replies. "I find it -- those statements offensive. And like with any relationship, there are many different levels to it. You know, I find it very offensive. There is no need to protect my daughter from my religion."

"And Ms. Holmes has never indicated in any way that was one of the reasons she left you? To protect Suri from Scientology?," the lawyer probes.

"Did she say that? That was one of the assertions, yes," he finally admits. "There are many other aspects to the divorce."

Cruise is then asked whether Homes is a "suppressive person," which according to Scientology is a person who publicly renounces "fellowship with the Church as well as with other Scientologists."

"That is a distortion and simplification of the matter. I don't want to just give an oversimplification of religious doctrine," he says.

In the filings, Cruise also compares acting to competing in the Olympics and fighting in Afghanistan.

"I train, you know, I've studied, you know, professional athletes, Olympians. A sprinter for the Olympics, they only have to run two races a day," Cruise explains. "When I'm shooting, I could potentially have to run 30, 40 races a day, day after day."

As for whether he agrees with his lawyer that his absence from Suri is similar to that of a soldier deployed to Afghanistan, Cruise says: "I didn't hear the Afghanistan comment, but that's what it feels like, and certainly on this last movie, it was brutal. It was brutal."

"If she (Suri) had asked me to be there, I would have been there. I would have worked it out in any way I could."

"Things change and there is different agreements, like in any divorce, where you work out schedules," he continues. "It's just a different set of circumstances. It certainly does not mean that I've abandoned my daughter."
