Tatum O'Neal Arrested For Drugs, Claims It Was For 'Research'

Oscar-winner Tatum O'Neal was released from jail on Monday following her arrest for buying drugs from a homeless man in the Lower East Side of New York.

O'Neal was charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance and arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court. She was arrested after an undercover cop spotted her and the man acting suspiciously. The two walked together until the man left and came back with a small packet he gave O'Neal in exchange for cash. That's when the cop busted the star for criminal possession of crack.

The 'New York Daily News' reports that O'Neal first told police that she was "doing research for a part" and changed her story after police searched her and found a bag of crack, a bag of regular cocaine and an unused crack pipe.

"I've been clean for a long time," the Daily News reported her as telling police. "Today was the first time I was relapsing, but you guys saved me. Can you let me go?"

O'Neal is probably best known for winning an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress for playing a child grifter opposite in 1973's 'Paper Moon' at age 10. That also led to her role in 1976's 'Bad News Bears' in which she became, at the time, the highest-paid child star in history.

In recent years she's guest starred on various television shows.
