Meanwhile, Bowser, the king of the Koopas, invades the Mushroom Kingdom with his army of Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Piranha Plants, and other creatures. He captures Princess Daisy, the ruler of the kingdom, and uses her pendant to open a portal to Earth.

He plans to use Peach’s pendant to complete his conquest of both worlds. He sends his henchman Spike, along with Kamek, a powerful Magikoopa, to find Peach and her pendant.

Mario, Luigi, Peach, and their friend Toad, a loyal Mushroom citizen who escaped from Bowser’s invasion, follow Spike and Kamek through the portal and end up in the Mushroom World. There, they discover that it is a magical land full of wonders and dangers.
