Sophia Bush 'Embarrassed' Over California's Gay Marriage Ban, Other Reactions

As the protests continue in California over the passage of Proposition 8, more celebrities are expressing their disappointment with the outcome of the ballot proposition.

Over the weekend, 'One Tree Hill' star Sophia Bush (photosSophia Bush photos) said she was 'embarrassed' over the same-sex marriage ban: "I'm really proud to be an American, and I'm embarrassed to be a Californian right now."

"I won't even dance around it for the sake of people who watch my show, who might have been supporting it. I'm disgusted that in a world that is so full of hatred and bigotry and war and famine... you know we're watching children overseas dying everyday of starvation and malaria and we're criticizing two people for loving each other."

"And I think that it's devastating. And I think it's just so that when we've been so progressive, we've also taken so many steps backwards," said Bush echoing much of what Ellen DeGeneres voiced last week when she called it a 'giant step away' from equality.

In an interview with MTV, Christina Aguilera (photosChristina Aguilera photos) said she didn't understand why it was shot down: "I think it's discrimination. I don't understand how people can be so closed-minded and so judgmental. We chose an African-American president who means so much in a time in history of great change and open-mindedness. Why is this any different? It just doesn't make sense to me."

Even Linday Lohan's girlfriend, Samantha Ronson, took time to rant against the decision. Ronson said she was shocked that voters approved an animal-rights initiative but refused to approve gay marriage: "I guess people care more about farm animals than they do their fellow man, that's really sad to me."

"Yes, I am glad that the chickens will have more room and better conditions as they wait to die, but I just think it's frightening that people show more compassion for tomorrow's dinner than for the chef."
