Shanna Moakler Resigns Over Trump's Miss California Decision

Shanna Moakler has resigned as co-executive director of the Miss California pageant on Wednesday, saying she no longer believes in the organization because of owner Donald Trump's decision to let Carrie Prejean keep her crown.

"Since the press conference yesterday, I had a chance to think about what has taken place, and I feel that at this time it is in my best interest to resign from the Miss California USA organization," Moakler, a former Miss USA herself, said in a statement.

"I cannot with a clear conscience move forward supporting and promoting the Miss Universe Organization when I no longer believe in it or the contracts I signed committing myself as a youth."

"I want to be a role model for young women with high hopes of pageantry, but now feel it more important to be a role model for my children. I am sorry and hope I have not let any young supporters down but wish them the best of luck in fulfilling their dreams."

Earlier this week, before Trump's decision, Moakler said Prejean violated the contract she signed with pageant organizers and expected her to be stripped of the title. She said Prejean's failure to reveal various topless photos to organizers was enough to show that she entered the pageant under false pretenses.

However, Trump didn't share the same opinion and while he acknowledged the photos were 'risque', he refused to take away Miss California's crown, remarking: "We are in the 21st century."

Moaker offered her support to Prejean after Trump's allowed her to continue as Miss California, however, she says she decided to resign after she was "up all night trying to make the right decision."

UPDATE:

In an interview on Ryan Seacrest's radio show this morning, Shanna Moakler spoke in greater detail about what changed her mind.

"The turning point for me, I guess, was when I was watching the Today show and she was sitting there continuing to lie," she said. "And it's obvious to everybody that the lying is still going on. I just couldn't stand behind her."

"In the room with Donald, he did say, 'If she continues to breach her contract, I'll fire her.' I wish he had said it at the press conference. Instead I feel like she got basically rewarded for lying."

"Saying the wind is blowing her top when she's barely wearing a top, it just looks foolish."
