In an appearance with David Letterman on 'Late Night', Shailene Woodley (photosShailene Woodley photos) tried to explain eating clay and making it a part of her diet.

"Clay is one of my favorites because if you look at indigenous cultures around the world, people are eating clay almost daily," she explained. "It's just a part of their diet."

"Pregnant woman eat clay too, because it's really good for their bodies and their babies. I'm not joking, look it up, It's really interesting!"

"Well, it is. I'll give you that. It's very interesting," quipped Letterman.

The comedian then wondered the "difference between clay and dirt."

"I, actually, I mean clay... uh, that is a great question," replied Woodley. "I think dirt is made from different matter. It's a different material. I'm not smart enough to answer the question."

After pointing out clay "is not absorbed" so she gets the benefits from it like a fiber, Letterman laughed "Have you heard of Metamucil?"
