Sequel Unlikely After 'Ghostbusters' Heading For $70 Million Loss

Soon after the release of the 'Ghostbusters' all-female reboot, Sony Pictures proclaimed the film a success and a sequel likely.

However, with the reboot now headed for a loss of more than $70 million, it doesn't look like a follow-up film will happen.

The 'Ghostbusters' reboot has earned just over $180 million at the worldwide box office, including $118 million domestically. It's expected that the film will have trouble reaching $230 million as it closes its run at theaters.

The film had a budget of $144 million. However, after including marketing costs, it needed to earn at least $300 million to break even. That leaves it short $70 million even using most optimistic projections.

Sony Pictures tells THR that number isn't accurate since the brand has "multiple revenue streams, including consumer products, gaming, location-based entertainment, continued international rollout, and huge third-party promotional partnerships that mitigated costs."

However, while Sony may be trying to put a positive spin of the Paul Feig directed film that it hoped would serve as a tentpole film and the beginning of a new franchise, only time will tell whether the studio wants to put its chips on the table for another round.
