'Sarah Silverman Program' Showrunners Refuse To Work With 20% Budget Cut

A budget slash is jeopardizing one of Comedy Central's signature series, 'The Sarah Silverman (photosSarah Silverman photos) Program'.

This after the show's executive producers Silverman, Dan Sterling and Rob Schrab have threatening to quit after the cable network told them the budget for their series' upcoming third season would be cut by more than twenty percent.

Comedy Central had proposed to bring back the WGA Award-nominated show at about $850,000 an episode, down from the $1.1 million an episode budget for the show's second season, due to cuts imposed by parent company MTV Networks.

However, producers of the comedy show that also features animated and musical sequences, have told the network that it isn't possible to continue the show with the new budget, citing other single-camera comedies are produced for much more at roughly $1.5 million an episode at the low end. The executive producers' response has shocked Comedy Central's top brass, who are reportedly scrambling to find a budget compromise that would keep the show on the air.

Inside sources are optimistic that the two sides can agree on new financial terms to bring back the show, so still expect a cut, albeit not one as steep.

Most networks have made similar budget cuts for the upcoming season, although the budget slashes range between a much lower two to five percent.
