Russia's Kremlin Praises Stone's 'Snowden' As 'Brilliant' and 'Must See'

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has praised Oliver Stone's Snowden, which opened in Russia on Thursday.

Peskov tells Russian news agency RIA Novosti that the biopic about NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden is "top quality."

"It has a brilliant script, and, what is most important, it is nearly a documentary," he says. "This is an excellent opportunity for everyone to learn what actually happened. It's a must-see."

Based on British journalist Luke Harding's book 'The Snowden Files' and with contributions by Snowden himself, the movie stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the former NSA analyst.

Snowden, who is the subject of a campaign asking to be pardoned by President Obama before he leaves office, has lived in exile in Russia since 2013.

"Edward Snowden's case presents one for President Obama to use the presidential power of pardon proudly and unequivocally, in recognition of one of the most important acts of whistleblowing in modern history," says ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero.

"By standing up for the privacy rights of his fellow citizens—individuals who had no idea that the government had assumed such extraordinary and invasive powers in secret—Edward Snowden should be thanked, and not punished."

Snowden has made no secret of the fact he would like to return to the United States.

"I look forward to coming home," he says, "but I cannot support the persecution of those charged under an Espionage Act, when they have committed no espionage."
