Russell Crowe Recalls Chance Meeting With 16-Yr-Old Henry Cavill

On Friday night's 'Tonight Show', Russell Crowe spoke about a chance meeting with 'Man of Steel' star Henry Cavill more than a decade earlier -- even before he was in Hollywood.

"In 2000, I was making a movie called 'Proof of Life' and we shot just north of London in a school. They had a bunch of kids there playing football and Henry was one of them," said Crowe. "And I was watching the kids playing and there was one kid on that field who was a dominant player. He was fluid and control of what he was doing. He kind of caught my eye."

"And then, in between shots, that kid came over to say hello. He was such a serious little insect and he just wanted to talk about acting, you know. You can answer those questions a hundred thousand times and you know it's pointless because there's nothing shining in that person's eyes. But Henry's eyes just had a fire in them like he was really serious. So I took him seriously and answered him seriously."

Crowe says he remembered the 16-year-old Cavill a couple of days later, as filming wrapped up, and handed him a gift box that included a photograph from Gladiator that he signed with 'Dear Henry, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.'

And the two finally met again tweleve years later to film Superman with Crowe playing Cavill's Kryptonian dad.

But Crowe says he didn't immediately realize that the star of the film was the same kid he met all those years earlier.

The actor also rode his bicycle to 'The Tonight Show', a trek of about 17 miles.
