Richard Gere No Longer A Wanted Man In India For Kiss

Richard Gere can celebrate. He is no longer a wanted man in India for publicly kissing Bollyood star Shilpa Shetty.

India's top court has suspended an arrest warrant against Gere, who was wanted for breaking public obscenity laws by kissing Shilpa Shetty at a public AIDS awareness event last year. Gere made headlines when he arched over and repeatedly kissed Shetty on stage.

Shetty later explained that Gere told her that the spontaneous public display of affection was meant to be a reenactment of a scene from Gere's film 'Shall We Dance'. However, the country's conservative groups were up in arms and subsequently filed obscenity complaints against Gere and Shetty.

Judge Dinesh Gupta, who originally issued the warrants, called the public display "highly sexually erotic" that "transgressed all limits of vulgarity" and had "the tendency to corrupt the society."

If you haven't seen footage of the incident, you can view it in our original story.

Gere frequently visits India to promote AIDS awareness and the plight of Tibetan exiles.
