Prison Break Cancelled By Fox; Final Episodes To Air This Spring

Prison Break has been sentenced to life -- off the air.

Fox announced Tuesday that the current season of the show will be its last. Which means in addition to the remaining six episodes, there's a possibility of a few more episodes being shot to wrap up the characters' storylines.

"Prison Break had a hell of a run but it's at the end of its run", Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly said at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in LA.

"We'll put that one in the win column but the show is just played out. Creatively, everybody feels enough stories have been told. We want to finish strong and not just gimp out next season. They have a cool ending."

The show premiered to big ratings in 2005, averaging 12.1 million viewers, but numbers have steadily declined since to nearly half that.

In fact, its a testament to the creative team that the one season style show has managed to stay on the air for four years.

Prison Break will return on April 17, a Friday, at 8 PM EST for its final run of episodes.
