Portia de Rossi to Take Ellen DeGeneres' Last Name

Portia de Rossi will soon be Portia DeGeneres.

The 37-year-old actress has filed a petition in L.A. Superior Court to legally change her name to Portia Lee James DeGeneres, to take the name of her wife of two years.

DeGeneres and de Rossi began dating in December 2004. They tied the knot on August 16, 2008 when gay marriage was legalized in the state of California.

However, same sex marriage was outlawed in California just months after its legalization by the Proposition 8 bill.

In a landmark ruling last week, a US judge branded Proposition 8 "unconstitutional", and overturned the same sex marriage ban.

A move that prompted Ellen DeGeneres to rejoice: "This just in: Equality won! Now, we've made a huge step forward. We're all equal, and we should all have equal rights. I'm so grateful for today's decision."

"I am ecstatic that proposition 8 has been overturned in the state of California," chimed in Portia. "This is an incredibly exciting and historical day and a big step towards equal rights for all."

A judge is expected to approve the request as such petitions are routinely granted.
