Oliver Stone To Write and Direct Edward Snowden Film

Oliver Stone will write and direct a film about Edward Snowden in what will be one of two high-profile films in development about the National Security Agency whistleblower.

Stone will adapt 'The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man', a book by Guardian journalist Luke Harding.

He has already begun work on the screenplay. In comments made last year, Stone defended Edward Snowden for leaking details on NSA's massive global surveillance and said he was "a hero because he revealed secrets that we should all know."

"This is one of the greatest stories of our time," Stone says in a statement, adding it would be "a real challenge."

Last month, Sony Pictures also announced its Edward Snowden project after it purchased rights to Glenn Greenwald's 'No Place to Hide: Edward Snowden, the NSA and the U.S. Surveillance State.' James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson are helming Sony's vision.
