'Newlywed Game' To Feature George Takei & Brad Altman As First Gay Couple

'The Newlywed Game', which debuted on ABC in 1966 but now airs on GSN, has announced that it will feature its first-ever gay couple this season.

George Takei, who played Mr. Sulu on 'Star Trek', will appear with his partner, Brad Altman.

Although the two have been together for two decades, they just celebrated their first anniversary after getting married in Los Angeles last September, two months before voters overruled the decision that briefly legalized gay marriage in the state.

"What we want is to display the normality and the joy of having a happy union," says Takei. "To be included in something we never felt we'd be included in is very satisfying."

"George and I are thrilled. It's pretty historic for us," adds Altman. "It's going to be a great experience for both of us to see how well we really know each other after 22 years together."

GSN's programming chief, Kelly Goode, says the move "made sense" because "the show has always reflected the times in terms of marriages depicted and this felt like the next logical step."

'The Newlywed Game' will premiere on October 21 and Takei's episode should air sometime the same month.
