Neil Patrick Harris Says CBS Talked To Him About Taking Over 'Late Show'

Soon after David Letterman announced he would be retiring from the 'Late Show' in 2015, Neil Patrick Harris' name was bandied about as a possible replacement for the comedian.

Now the former 'How I Met Your Mother' has confirmed that CBS had in fact approached him about the gig, before it named Stephen Colbert as Letterman's successor, but he didn't want to host a late night talk show.

"In that instance, I felt like I knew what my skill sets were and I kind of knew what it is that I wanted to do after How I Met Your Mother... so I was surprised he pitched me that idea," Harris told Howard Stern of his conversation with CBS CEO Les Moonves.

"I think I would get bored of the repetition fast, and the structure of it is so set," Harris explained.

"I don't have any interest in doing monologue, commercial, sketch, guest, guest, guest, musical act, good night."

Harris said he's always wanted to do a weekly variety show that would allow him more creativity and preparation time but the opportunity hasn't come up yet.
