NBC News Twitter Account Reports False Ground Zero Attack

NBC News' Twitter account was hacked on Friday, two days before the tenth anniversary of 9/11, to falsely report that New York had been the target of a terrorist attack.

A hacker group called The Script Kiddies claimed responsibility for the messages, which said a hijacked plane had crashed at Ground Zero.

"Breaking News! Ground Zero has just been attacked," it said. "Flight 5736 has crashed into the site, suspected hijacking. more as the story develops."

"This is not a joke, Ground Zero has just been attacked," said another. "We're attempting to get reporters on the scene."

The same group also hacked into Fox News' Twitter account earlier this year to proclaim President Obama had been assassinated.

"Fox News was selected because we figured their security would be just as much of a joke as their reporting," they mocked the cable news channel at the time.

NBC is apologizing for the false breaking news report and says its working with the service to address the hacking.

"The NBC News twitter account was hacked late this afternoon and as a result, false reports of a plane attack on ground zero were sent."

"We are working with Twitter to correct the situation and sincerely apologize for the scare that could have been caused by such a reckless and irresponsible act."
