NBC Commentator Dan Hicks Defends Comments Criticized As Sexist

NBC commentator Dan Hicks is defending his comments after saying the husband of Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu was "the guy responsible" for her turnaround.

Hicks' commentary was criticized as sexist by viewers with "you did it - not your husband" was among the social media phrases tending following NBC's coverage of the 400-meter individual medley.

He says the swimmer told him that she credits her American-born husband for improving her training and confidence after she lost the same event four years ago.

"It is impossible to tell Katinka's story accurately without giving appropriate credit to Shane, and that's what I was trying to do," he says.

Although he concedes "with live TV, there are often times you look back and wished you had said things differently."

"But he has turned her into a tiger in the pool."
