Nazril 'Ariel' Irham's Sex Tapes Send Him To Jail

Nazril 'Ariel' Irham, one of Indonesia's best known pop stars, has been sentenced to three and a half 2 years behind bars after two sex tapes with his celebrity girlfriends leaked on to the Internet.

As part of his conviction under the country's anti-pornography law, Ariel will also have to pay a $28,000 fine. He is the first high-profile offender of the pornography law that went into effect in 2008 and carries a maximum penalty of 12 years.

The first video surfaced last year and featured Ariel with then girlfriend Luna Maya, a model and television journalist who interviewed Hillary Clinton during the US secretary of state's visit to Indonesia. The second tape followed months later with Ariel and Cut Tari, a soap opera star.

Afraid of retribution in the predominantly Muslim nation, all three celebrities publicly denied appearing in the tapes, saying the people in the footage simply looked just like them but authorities didn't buy it.

Ariel finally admitted that the tapes were stolen from his house and posted online without his permission, but presiding Judge Singgih Budi Prakoso said the pop star should have been more careful.

"As a public figure, the defendant should be aware that fans might imitate his behavior," Prakoso said. "The defendant is legitimately and convincingly guilty of giving chances for others to spread, make and provide pornography."

It is not yet clear if the women in the videos will also be punished. Ariel could have received as many as twelve years in jail.
