MSNBC News' Andrea Mitchell Reveals Breast Cancer Battle

On her MSNBC show Wednesday, Andrea Mitchell revealed that she's battling breast cancer.

"I had planned to be hiking in Wyoming last week, but instead discovered that I am now among the 1 in 8 women in this country -- incredibly 1 in 8 -- who have had breast cancer," she said.

Mitchell said she was fortunate that her doctor caught the cancer in its earliest stage during her annual screening.

"It was discovered during my annual screening just a short time ago."

"Luckily for me, I am one of the fortunate ones; we discovered it in the earliest stage, it hadn't spread, and I'm already back at work with a terrific prognosis."

Mitchell, who is NBC News' chief foreign affairs correspondent, reminded women that screening for breast cancer was important.

"I'm looking at this as another of life's lessons. For you women out there, and the men who love you, screening matters. Do it."

"This disease can be completely curable if you find it at the right time."
