Michael Phelps Loses By Seconds To Simulated Shark In 'Shark Week'

Michael Phelps lost to a great white shark on Sunday night on Discovery Channel's Shark Week special 'Phelps vs. Shark'.

Except the prolific Olympic medalist didn't swim with a real shark. Instead, he raced against a computer simulated one while earing a wetsuit and a monofin to mimic a shark's powerful tail.

"Clearly, we can't put Michael in one lane and a white shark on the far lane. We're gonna have to do a simulation," the program told viewers a long way into the program billed as a race against a shark.

Viewers had reason to feel cheated when Phelps swam in the ocean against a CGI "shark" based on the swimming speed of the great white.

He finished the 100 meter race in 38 seconds, two seconds slower than the shark.

Following the race, Phelps joked on social media he was up for a rematch -- in warmer water. Although viewers probably won't be.
