Michael Phelps Arrested For DUI After Going Double Speed Limit

Olympic champion Michael Phelps is apologizing after being arrested for DUI in Baltimore on Tuesday.

"Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines," Phelps says.

"I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down."

The record-holding 22-time medalist was stopped by police after going nearly double the speed limit at 84 mph in a 45 mph zone.

An officer followed the white Range Rover through the Fort McHenry tunnel and pulled him over -- where he failed a field sobriety test.

Law enforcement sources says Phelps' blood alcohol was also at nearly twice the legal limit. This is Phelps's second DUI arrest. He also had a DUI in 2004 at age 19.
