Michael Douglas Joins Marvel's 'Ant-Man' As Original Superhero

Coming fresh off the Golden Globes win for his portrayal of Liberacein HBO's 'Behind the Candelabra', Michael Douglas has joined his first comic book film.

The 69-year-old has joined Marvel's 'Ant-Man' as scientist Hank Pym in the Edgar Wright-helmed film.

"With Hank Pym's rich history in the Marvel Universe, we knew we needed an actor capable of bringing the weight and stature to the role that the character deserves," says Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. "We felt incredibly relieved when Michael Douglas agreed to step in to the part with the charm and fortitude he brings to every character he inhabits, and couldn't be more excited to see what he will do to bring Hank Pym to life."

The announcement also confirms that Paul Rudd will play Scott Lang, a former thief and electronics expert who steals the technology to become Ant-Man.

Fans had wondered which incarnation of Ant-Man Rudd would be playing since while Pym discovers the particles and is the first Ant-Man, Lang is equally important in the universe.

The casting also indicates that Wright is largely following the blueprint he laid out in an interview all the way back in 2006.

"What we want to do, the idea that we have for the adaptation is to actually involve both. Is to have a film that basically is about Henry Pym and Scott Lang," he said of what his vision of an Ant-Man film would look like. "So you actually do a prologue where you see Pym as Ant-Man in action in the 60s and then the contemporary, sort of flash-forward, is Scott Lang's story, and how he comes to acquire the suit, how he crosses paths with Henry Pym, and then, in an interesting sort of Machiavellian way, teams up with him."

'Ant-Man' has a release date of July 31, 2015.
