Melissa McCarthy Responds To Critic Who Called Her 'Female Hippo'

Melissa McCarthy is finally talking about the New York Observer critic who described her as "tractor-sized" and a "female hippo" when he reviewed her comedy 'Identity Thief' in February.

The actress tells the New York Times her first reaction to Rex Reed's column was "Really? followed by, "Why would someone OK that?"

Reed called McCarthy a "gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious."

The actress says such criticism would have "crushed me" in her younger years "but now, in a strange epidemic of body image and body dysmorphia, just add to all those younger girls, that are not in a place in their life where they can say, 'That doesn't reflect on me.'"

"I felt really bad for someone who is swimming in so much hate," she adds. "I just thought, that's someone who's in a really bad spot, and I am in such a happy spot."

"I laugh my head off every day with my husband and my kids who are mooning me and singing me songs."
