Matt Damon: 'I Didn't Take A Role Away From A Chinese Actor' In 'Great Wall'

Matt Damon is defending being cast in 'The Great Wall' in response to accusations that he took away a role from an Asian actor in the joint China-Hollywood production.

"That whole idea of whitewashing, I take that very seriously," Damon tells the AP in an interview.

Damon thinks people will change their mind "once people see that it's a monster movie and it's a historical fantasy and I didn't take a role away from a Chinese actor."

"It wasn't altered because of me in any way," he insists.

Damon says it became a story out of the film's first 30-second teaser because of the age we live in.

This after Constance Wu, star of 'Fresh Off the Boat', criticized that: "We have to stop perpetuating the racist myth that only a white man can save the world."

"It suddenly becomes a story because people click on it, versus the traditional ways that a story would get vetted before it would get to that point," he explains.

'Great Wall' is thought to be the most expensive joint production between the two countries with a budget of more than $150 million. In the movie, China's Great Wall is built to keep out aliens and monsters instead of human invaders.
