Marvel's Black Female Teen Iron Man To Be Called 'Ironheart'

Marvel has revealed the superhero name for its black female teen Iron Man announced last month.

Riri Williams will be Ironheart. Fans had been speculating she may be called "Iron Maiden" but writer Brian Michael Bendis says Marvel didn't want the name for one big reason.

"Iron Woman seemed old-fashioned to some. Iron Maiden looked like a legal nightmare," he says. "And Ironheart, coined by Joe Quesada, after I told him my planned story for Riri, speaks not only to the soul of the character but to the Iron Man franchise as a whole."

"Tony first put on the armor to save his heart. Riri puts it on for different reasons altogether but still heart-related. When people see her story, you'll be amazed at how simple and brilliant Joe's suggestion was."

Riri, a science genius like Stark, is an MIT student who joined the university at 15 in the comics and comes to the attention of the superhero when she builds her own Iron Man suit in her dorm.

Riri will officially step into the role this November in the relaunched 'Invincible Iron Man #1'.
