Martin Bashir Resigns From MSNBC Over Palin Remarks

MSNBC host Martin Bashir has resigned from the network, three weeks after making crude remarks about former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Bashir had suggested that someone should defecate in Palin's mouth because of a comment she made comparing the United States' indebtedness to China with slavery.

He criticized Palin and her "long-diseased mind" after playing video of her speech about China. He went on to tell the story of Thomas Thistlewood, a plantation overseer who dealt with wayward slaves by having another slave defecate or urinate in the mouth of the one to be punished.

"When Mrs. Palin invokes slavery," he said. "She doesn't just prove her rank ignorance, she confirms if anyone truly qualifies for a dose of discipline from Thomas Thistlewood, then she would be the outstanding candidate."

Bashir apologized days later but the outrage against him continued. He had been with MSNBC for three years.

"I deeply regret," Bashir said in his exit statement. "It is my sincere hope that all of my colleagues, at this special network, will be allowed to focus on the issues that matter without the distraction of myself or my ill-judged comments."

Bashir's resignation comes not long after MSNBC's split from Alec Baldwin.
