Man Dies After Choking On Doughnut In Bakery's Eating Challenge

A Colorado man has died after choking during a bakery's eating challenge.

Travis Malouff, 42, was participating in a contest to eat a doughnut the "size of a small cake" in 80 seconds or less at Voodoo Doughnuts.

The winner would have received the doughnut for free and a button saying they won the challenge.

"Malouff tore the doughnut in half and started eating it, walking around looking determined," a witness told ABC News. "The employee announced the elapsed time: 30 seconds."

"Malouff took a sip of water, another bite of doughnut and then hunched over the counter and starting pounding on it. Watching somebody participate in an eating contest, it looks like they're distressed," she said. "The whole thing looks like a sign of distress. Nobody realized what was happening."

When Malouff collapsed, a part of the doughnut was still in his hand. He was pronounced dead at the scene when paramedics arrived.

The coroner says Malouff died of asphyxia due to obstruction of the airway.
