'Lucy' Tops 'Hercules' With $44 Million Debut At Box Office

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson may have been last year's second highest earning actor, but his 'Hercules' was no match for 'Lucy'.

Luc Besson's 'Lucy', starring Scarlett Johansson (photosScarlett Johansson photos) as an accidental psychokinetic, handily topped 'Hercules' by director Brett Ratner at the weekend box office.

The heavily promoted 'Hercules' took in $29 million compared to 'Lucy's estimate of $44 million.

'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' slid into third spot with $16.4 million.

The summer box office is down by around twenty percent compared to last year. However, a big contributing factor to that number is the fact that 'Fast & Furious 7' -- which was to be a big performer -- was postponed following the tragic death of Paul Walker.

The top three films internationally were 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes', 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' and 'Continent'.

See a complete rundown of the box office below:

1. Lucy, $44 million.
2. Hercules, $29 million.
3. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, $16.4 million.
4. Purge: Anarchy, $9.9 million.
5. Planes: Fire & Rescue, $9.3 million.
6. Sex Tape, $6 million.
7. Transformers: Age of Extinction, $4.6 million
8. And So It Goes, $4.6 million.
9. Tammy, $3.4 million.
10. A Most Wanted Man, $2.7 million.
