Lorne Michaels: If Jimmy Fallon Fails 'Just Blame The Economy'

'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon' is set to premiere tonight on NBC at 12:35 AM EST.

Fallon says he feels like they've gotten a 'lot of kinks out of the way' after five test shows but he's 'still kind of nervous' for the first night.

And television producer Lorne Michaels, who was there for each one, gives his thoughts on what we can expect from Jimmy: "Well, they got progressively better. You know, which is a good thing. You know, I think there's just no way of doing it, other than doing it and Monday there'll be all the pressure of having great guests.

"But I think by the end of this week, we should know a little bit. We won't know a lot for months, because you just have to keep trying stuff. Trying different comedy bits and sketches. I mean the worst that can happen is that its very, very bad but from that point you go up. I think he's going to be great at it."

"If wanting to be great matters, I think he'll be fine. It's not like his standards aren't high enough, he doesn't care, or he's not on it. The test shows teach you but you don't know until you've done it because it comes down to Jimmy. I'm confident, but you know, I don't actually have to do the show."

"Listen, if the show doesn't work, you just blame the economy. I think everybody else is blaming everything else on the economy anyway."

The first show will feature Robert DeNiro, Justin Timberlake, and musician Van Morrison, who will perform from his 'Astral Weeks' album (guest list for first week).
