'Life of Pets' Beats 'Ghostbusters' To Hold Top Spot At Box Office

'Ghostbusters' wasn't the flop some expected but the female-led reboot's $46 million wasn't enough to beat 'The Secret Life of Pets'.

'The Secret Life of Pets' stayed on top with $50.6 million in its second week. The animated film has earned over $200 million domestically.

Nevertheless, Sony called the result "a triumph" saying it was the best opening for a live-action comedy in more than a year.

But despite Sony's proclamation and maybe the resurrection of the franchise, the next installment of 'Ghostbusters' will no doubt have a drastically reduced budget considering the film cost $144 million to produce and another $100 million to market.

Meanwhile, Finding Dory became the top-grossing animated title of all time in North America as it reached $445 million domestically.

The complete weekend box office rundown:

1. The Secret Life of Pets, $50.6 million.
2. Ghostbusters, $46 million.
3. The Legend of Tarzan, $11.1 million.
4. Finding Dory, $11 million.
5. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, $7.5 million.
6. The Purge: Election Year, $6.1 million.
7. Central Intelligence, $5.3 million.
8. The Infiltrator, $5.3 million.
