Larry Wilmore Defends Using N-Word At White House Correspondents' Dinner

On his show Monday night, Larry Wilmore defended his use of the N-word at the White House Correspondents' Association dinner.

Wilmore took a beating online after concluding his remarks, where he talked about progress on race and a black man being president, by saying: "So, Mr. President, if I'm going to keep it 10: Yo Barry, you did it, my n--ga. You did it."

"Like the president himself, the reaction was mixed," Wilmore said on 'The Nightly Show' night.

"I completely understand why people would be upset about that," Wilmore said. "It's a very charged word — I get it."

Wilmore told viewers he didn't use the use the word ending in "er," instead used it ending in "a," which he said was a "term of endearment some black people use between each other to take back that power."

"That's horrible! I would never do that," he explained.

"You did not properly conjugate that slur," he said to Piers Morgan, who criticized him for uttering the word. "Very important."

Meanwhile, the White House said President Barack Obama wasn't offended by the comedian's use of the racial slur Saturday night.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Obama "appreciated the spirit and the sentiments that Mr. Wilmore expressed."

"He ended his speech by saying that he couldn't put into words the pride that he felt in this president, and he made the observation that this country has made remarkable progress in this lifetime."

"I'm confident that Mr. Wilmore used the word by design. He was seeking to be provocative. But I think any reading of his comments makes it clear he was not using the president as a butt of a joke," Earnest added.
