Kathie Lee Gifford Asks Martin Short About Wife, Unaware She Died In 2010

Today show co-host Kathie Lee Gifford asked Martin Short about his wife and marriage during an interview, unaware that the actor's wife died in 2010.

"You and Nancy have got one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business," Gifford said. "How many years for you guys?"

Short, without correcting Gifford, replied they were married 36 years.

Gifford then asked, "But you're still in love?"

"Madly in love," said Short.

"Why?!" Gifford asked cheekily. Short joked it was because he was "cute. I'm cute."

It wasn't until after the commercial break that Gifford apologized for the previous segment, telling the audience Short informed her before he left and she felt "so badly" for the mistake.

"Martin just told me as he was leaving, he said 'Kathie you probably didn't know,' but his beautiful, precious wife Nancy did pass away a year and a half ago of ovarian cancer. I feel so badly. My apologies to him and his family for not realizing that."

Short's wife, Nancy Dolman, died in August 2010 of ovarian cancer.

Gifford later said on Twitter that Short "handled the situation with enormous grace and kindness and I'm so grateful."

Watch the interview below. The faux pas happens around the 3:30 mark:
