'Karate Kid' Chops 'The A-Team' with $56 Million Debut

'The Karate Kid' has won a 1980s showdown at the box office against 'The A-Team'.

Sony Pictures' remake of 'The Karate Kid', starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, opened to a better than expected $56 million, while 20th Century Fox's highly hyped revival of 'The A-Team' debuted to a soft $26 million.

Experts had predicted that both films would be battling in a tight race for top spot in the $30-million to $35-million range, with 'Karate Kid' drawing more families and 'The A-Team' mostly men.

The end result was that the 'The Karate Kid' made back its modest production budget of $40 million in just one weekend. It's the first movie of the summer to substantially exceed pre-release estimates in what so far has been a somewhat disappointing movie season.

The debut also gave Jaden Smith the biggest opening of his young career, and surpassed all but two films starring his father, Will Smith. The films being 'I Am Legend' ($77.2 million) and 'Hancock' ($62.6 million).

Meanwhile, after three weekends at number one, 'Shrek Forever After' slipped to third with $15.8 million. The animated hit raised its domestic total to $210.1 million, becoming the fourth movie this year to top the $200 million mark. 'Get Him to the Greek' declined to $10.1 million, and 'Killers' dropped to $8.1 million.

Next weekend will likely see 'Karate Kid' hand over the top spot to 'Toy Story 3' as Pixar go back to its roots with the latest sequel to the 1995 hit that propelled the studio to where it is today.
