Joss Whedon: Battle With Marvel For 'Age of Ultron' Got 'Really Unpleasant'

Director Joss Whedon is revealing some of what went on behind the scenes at Marvel for 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' and it wasn't always positive.

In an interview, Whedon says that Marvel didn't want the scene in which Hawkeye visits his family at their farmhouse and the characters experiencing dream sequences.

But instead they were almost threatening in wanting him to include the with Erik joining Thor in the cave.

"The dreams were not an executive favorite either the dreams, the farmhouse, these were things I fought to keep," Whedon said. "With the cave, it really turned into: They pointed a gun at the farm's head and said, 'Give us the cave, or we'll take out the farm' in a civilized way."

"I respect these guys, they're artists, but that's when it got really, really unpleasant."

Whedon says there was even more footage in the cave but after test audiences didn't like it, that was cut. But not completely.

"I was so beaten down at that point that I was like, 'Sure, OK what movie is this?' And the editors were like, 'No. You have to show it. You can't just say it.'"

He also explains that he wanted to include Captain Marvel and Spider-Man at the end of the film but Marvel was against it because pen hadn't been put to paper at that point.

"I would have put both of them, but neither of the deals were made. And then they were like, 'We're making a Captain Marvel movie and we've got Spider-Man as a property,' and I'm like, 'I've already locked my film, you f--kers! Thanks for nothing.'"

He also confirmed that a scene was in fact shot with the first film's villain, Loki, but they decided to leave it out.

"We did shoot something and it didn't play. The movie has so much, is so filled and we didn't want it to feel overstuffed."

"I really wanted to have Loki in it but I understood the decision, that it was just like, 'Now there are too many voices in the chorus.' At some point the embarrassment of riches is actually embarrassing."
