Jodie Foster's Stalker Arrested After Making Bomb Threats

A man who had been sending Jodie Foster threatening letters for several years has been arrested on charges of mailing a bomb threat to a Los Angeles based airport.

Michael Smegal, a 42-year-old resident of Holliston, Massachusetts, has been charged with mailing a threatening letter to Van Nuys Airport in early December.

The letter was one of more than 100 such letters he mailed to other celebrities and airports, referencing Jodie Foster, from September 2007 to early 2008.

Foster started receiving the letters in 2004 and even after Smegal admitted to sending the letters in 2005, with a promise to police that he would stop, he continued sending them to various LA addresses.

After the latest threat, the FBI raided Smegal's home and found copies of same letter. But Smegel contended he sent the letters on behalf of the Oscar winning actress, reasoning he sent it to the particular airport because of a connection with the Screen Actors Guild, which he believed had neglected Foster and her talents.

If convicted, Smegal could face up to 10 years in prison.
