Jimmy Kimmel Tearfully Reveals Newborn Son's Heart Surgery In Emotional Monologue
In an emotional monologue, Kimmel tears up as he recalls how, at three days old, Billy had successful open heart surgery at Children's Hospital Los Angeles after a nurse noticed something odd with his heartbeat. "My wife was in bed relaxing, a very attentive nurse at Cedars-Sinai heard a murmur in his heart and noticed he was a bit purple, which is not common," Kimmel says. "They determined he wasn't getting enough oxygen in his blood, either in his heart or lungs." "It's a terrifying thing, you know my wife is back in the recovery room, she has no idea what's going on." Doctors determined Billy had a "hole in the wall of the left and right side of his heart." On Monday, Billy successfully underwent open heart surgery with another surgery scheduled for in 3-6 months. "Poor kid, not only did he get a bad heart, he got my face," Kimmel lightheartedly jokes. The host encourages donations to the hospital as he opens up about the ordeal. "No parent should ever have to decide if they can afford to save their child's life," he tearfully says at the end of the segment. "It just shouldn't happen." While thanking all those that sent him their thoughts, he quips: "Even that son of a bitch, Matt Damon, sent flowers." Kimmel also had Dr. Oz explain exactly what was going on with Billy's heart. Jimmy Kimmel and his wife Molly recently welcomed their second child together, William 'Billy' Kimmel.
