Jimmy Fallon Finally Speaks About Much Criticized Trump Interview

After losing the title of top-rated late night talk show to Stephen Colbert and 'The Late Show', Jimmy Fallon is finally speaking about his much criticized interview with Donald Trump.

Fallon took it on the chin when he failed to ask Trump any tough questions during an appearance before the election in September. The host instead kept the conversation jovial and also ran his fingers through the candidate's hair.

"Donald, I want to ask you because the next time I see you, you could be the president of the United States. I just wanted to know if there's something we could do that's not presidential really or something that we can do now that we're both civilians," he said.

The host now says he was "devastated" by the reaction to the interview.

"They have a right to be mad," he tells The New York Times. "If I let anyone down, it hurt my feelings that they didn't like it. I got it."

"I'm a people pleaser. If there's one bad thing about me, it will make me upset. So, after this happened, I was devastated. I didn't mean anything by it. I was just trying to have fun."

"I didn't do it to humanize him," Fallon added. "I almost did it to minimize him. I didn't think that would be a compliment: 'He did the thing that we all wanted to do.'"

The host said he regrets not addressing the backlash sooner.

"I didn't talk about it, and I should have talked about it. I regret that."

After initially defending it, the reflection comes as Fallon has seen ratings for 'The Tonight Show' decline, while rival Colbert, who has delivered blistering take-downs of the President, has risen to the top of the numbers.
