Model Jaylene Cook Under Fire For Posing Nude On Sacred New Zealand Mountain

Model Jaylene Cook is under fire by the Maori tribe after posing naked atop New Zealand's Mount Taranaki.

"It's like someone went into St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and took a nude photo," Dennis Ngawhare, a spokesperson for the local Maori tribe, tells the BBC.

"It's a sacred place and something like this is just very inappropriate."

The top of the volcano, considered the burial ground of the tribe's ancestors, is sacred for Maori.

The Jaylene Cook nude photo was taken when the Kiwi model climbed the mountain a few days ago with her partner. It shows hear wearing nothing but a hat, gloves and sneakers.

"This climb has forever changed me," she captioned it. "I proved just how far I could push myself and I am truly proud of my accomplishment."

Speaking about the criticism, she told a website that she didn't think her naked pose was "crude or explicit in any way."

"We made ourselves knowledgeable on the history of the mountain. We were quite respectful. Being nude is not something that is offensive in any way. It's natural and pure and it's about freedom and empowerment."
