'Incredible Hulk' Smashes Its Way To $54 Million At Box Office

The 'Incredible Hulk' smashed its way to the top of the box office, taking in $54.5 million over the movie's opening weekend.

While this was $8 million less than its predecessor (Ang Lee's 2003 'Hulk') made, it was well above the studio's expectations. The 2003 also saw a quick drop off after its opening weekend, due to negative word of mouth but that isn't expected to happen with the much more solid sequel. The 2003 movie earned $137 million in all at domestic box offices, and the sequel is now almost certain to surpass that total.

'Kung Fu Panda' stayed strong in its second weekend, and took in another $34.3 million for second spot. Meanwhile, the weekend's other new movie, M. Night Shyamalan's 'The Happening', landed in the No. 3 spot with $30.5 million, however, even with a third place opening it was still above expectations which were somewhere in $25 million range.

The 'Incredible Hulk' accounted for one-third of ticket sales over the weekend, and its opening was bigger than 'Batman Begins' and 'Superman Returns', although much smaller than 'Iron Man'. It also received an A-minus from moviegoers, compared with Ang Lee's 2003 movie which recieved a B-minus.

Here's how the box office numbers broke down:

1. The Incredible Hulk, $54.5 million.
2. Kung Fu Panda, $34.3 million.
3. The Happening, $30.5 million.
4. You Don't Mess With the Zohan, $16.4 million.
5. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, $13.5 million.
6. Sex and the City, $10.2 million.
7. Iron Man, $5.1 million.
8. The Strangers, $4.1 million.
9. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, $3 million.
10. What Happens in Vegas, $1.7 million.
