Hugh Laurie Won't Play Villain In 'RoboCop' Remake

Just when we were getting excited for Jose Padilha‘s 'RoboCop' remake comes news that Hugh Laurie won't be playing the film's villain after all.

The 'House' star had entered talks in June to play the wealthy owner of Omnicorp, the company that makes RoboCop. It appeared to be a done deal.

However, Variety is now reporting that Laurie has backed away from the project: "While he was never officially confirmed, Hugh Laurie has ended talks to play villain in RoboCop."

The film's cast still includes Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy/RoboCop, best known for 'The Killing', Gary Oldman as the scientist, Samuel L. Jackson as a media mogul and Abbie Cornish.

But it will need to search for a new man to play the villain with shooting set to begin in months.

Last month, the studio released its first viral teaser for the project to promote what it called OmniCorp's "newest innovation." It's aiming for an August 9, 2013 release.
